GQOM is one of South Africa’s fastest-growing exports. The bass-heavy, percussive genre has exploded onto international club scenes in London, Amsterdam, Berlin and beyond.
The design system developed for GQOM Powerhouse celebrated the local roots of the genre in the townships of Durban, South Africa, and the role taxi drivers played in popularising the sound by blasting tracks on their routes around the city.
Taking inspiration from the iconic airbrush artworks and decal customisations found on these taxis, the approach is loud, proud and ever so slightly chaotic, with sickly colour palettes and layered graphics reflecting the energy of the city that introduced GQOM to the world.
